Many dogs chew it without trouble, but swallowed pieces can choke a dog or block the gut, so SnoutScan caps any rawhide treat.
Rawhide is the inner layer of cow or other animal hide, cleaned and processed with chemicals, then pressed into chews. It has little nutritional value and digests slowly, so a large piece that is swallowed can cause choking or a blockage that needs surgery. Rawhide chews have also been recalled for chemical contamination.
Any treat with rawhide or hide cannot score above 40. When it is the first ingredient, it earns none of the first-ingredient protein points, because it is skin rather than meat. It shows as a red chip.
Rolled chews, knotted bones and twists, and listed as "beef hide" or "buffalo hide" on some labels.
SnoutScan looks for these words on a label:
Yes. SnoutScan treats beef hide, buffalo hide and plain "hide" the same as rawhide.
Ask your vet. Whatever the chew, pick one sized for your dog, stay nearby while they chew, and take it away once it is small enough to swallow.
