How SnoutScan scores dog food and treats

Toxic ingredients like chocolate, xylitol or grapes mean an automatic 0. Everything else is scored out of 100 in five parts:

  • Protein quality (30): named meats near the top, not by-products or plant protein boosters.
  • Carbs and fillers (20): few grains, potatoes or legumes up top, and no ingredient splitting.
  • Additives (20): points off for BHA, nitrites, dyes, sugar and high salt.
  • Nutrition (20): protein and fat from the guaranteed analysis, or estimated from the ingredients.
  • Label transparency (10): every source named, not "animal fat" or "meat derivatives".

Caution ingredients like garlic, rawhide and legume-heavy grain-free recipes are capped with a note explaining why. 85+ is excellent, 70+ good, 55+ okay. This is a guide to the label, not a substitute for your vet.
